SEO Audit Cost: What You Pay for and What to Expect
Compare SEO audit cost by scope, implementation ownership, and retesting. Includes dated provider examples, a budget calculation, and a quote worksheet.
Updated

Published SEO audit cost examples include $750–$2,500 at SeoProfy and $2,500–$7,500 reported by Neil Patel for his NP Digital team. These are supplier self-reports in US dollars, dated May 29, 2026 and August 26, 2025 respectively—not a market average or a Meridian quote. Use the comparisons and worksheet below to decide what your audit should cover and budget for implementation and retesting.
SEO audit cost: published price examples
The headline number is useful only when its scope and source travel with it. The two examples below show that providers can describe materially different offers under the same broad label.
Swipe horizontally to compare the full record.
| Published source | Amount (USD) | Source updated | Scope described |
|---|---|---|---|
| SeoProfy | $750–$2,500 | May 29, 2026 | Its own audit rate; custom pricing available |
| Neil Patel on NP Digital | $2,500–$7,500 | August 26, 2025 | His team's usual range for broad strategic audits |
Both pages were checked on September 14, 2026. Treat them as published positioning, then request a proposal for the actual website. Averaging the ranges would hide scope differences.
Choose the audit scope before comparing price
Start with the decision the audit must support. “Find every SEO issue” has no stable boundary. “Explain why product templates are not indexed and give our developer testable fixes” is easier to quote and evaluate.
An automated check can inventory detectable signals, but someone must still decide which observations are real problems and what matters first. A focused audit instead investigates agreed systems or questions, such as indexation, migration risk, one template family, or a defined content review. A broader strategic audit may combine technical, content, link, and competitive questions.
The label does not prove depth. Ask which page groups will be sampled, what access and evidence are required, and how findings will connect to URLs, owners, and an implementation queue. Before requesting quotes, prepare the domain, approximate page and template scale, languages, known symptoms, recent major changes, and the likely implementation owner.
Compare an independent audit with a retainer
An independent audit is a defined project with an endpoint. A retainer is recurring work that may include monitoring, production, implementation support, or reporting. Separate the included work and time window before comparing a monthly fee with a one-off audit.
Swipe horizontally to compare the full scope.
| Comparison point | Independent audit | SEO retainer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Answer a defined set of questions and produce a prioritized record | Continue agreed SEO work over recurring periods |
| End condition | Delivery, walkthrough, and agreed acceptance checks | Renewal, cancellation, or a separate phase decision |
| Implementation | May be excluded, assisted, or separately priced | May be included for selected tasks, but must be stated |
| Retest | Included, limited, or separately priced | May occur during ongoing work; timing and limits still need definition |
| Reporting | Audit findings, evidence, priorities, and handoff | Recurring activity and outcome reporting defined by the engagement |
If a retainer begins with an audit, separate the initial investigation from recurring work. Clarify whether the first invoice buys a completed audit, ongoing support, or both. For a recurring engagement, see our SaaS SEO budget and responsibility guide.
What changes technical SEO audit cost
Page count is a weak shortcut. A small site with several rendering systems, languages, and application routes may require more investigation than a larger site using one template. Ask which page groups and systems will be inspected.
Access also changes the work. A public crawl answers different questions from Search Console, analytics, logs, or staging evidence. Google’s hiring guidance advises discussing scope and providing read-only Search Console access at the audit stage. Define the necessary access and its owner.
Deliverable depth affects effort. A detected-URL list is different from findings with evidence, affected patterns, priorities, owners, recommended changes, and retests. Workshops, developer handoff, and implementation assistance should be explicit lines.
Clarify whether the support window covers delivery questions, a proposed-fix review, or a post-release retest. New templates or questions should follow an agreed scope-change process.
What a usable audit finding looks like
A useful finding lets another person reproduce the observation and decide what to do. In Meridian's own MER-01 record, dated September 1, 2026, /services/seo-services?lang=zh was moved to /zh/services/seo-services, with a permanent redirect and aligned canonical, alternate, and internal-link rules.
The value of the record is its chain from an observed URL pattern to an implementation and retest plan. It does not report an indexing, ranking, traffic, or inquiry increase. The technical SEO audit record includes a blank retest checklist you can adapt to your own site.
Check whether a sample identifies affected URLs, preserves the observation, proposes a change within the team's permissions, names an owner, and defines a public retest. Without those connections, the buyer may have to redo the prioritization.
Budget for implementation and retesting
Add separately priced implementation, team time, and the retest needed to confirm agreed fixes. Avoid counting work already included in the audit fee.
Illustrative budget—all amounts and hours below are fictional: a $1,200 audit plus 18 internal hours planned at $60 per hour, plus a separately priced $300 retest, produces a planning total of $2,580.
Swipe horizontally to view the full calculation.
| Budget line | Calculation | Planning amount |
|---|---|---|
| Audit | Fixed fictional input | $1,200 |
| Internal implementation time | 18 hours × $60 | $1,080 |
| Retest | Separate fictional input | $300 |
| Total | $1,200 + $1,080 + $300 | $2,580 |
External cash in this example totals $1,500. The internal $1,080 represents team capacity, not necessarily an additional cash payment. Replace every input. Taxes, currency conversion, tools, and added scope are excluded.
Keep cash costs and internal time separate; check what the quote already includes.
Compare quotes against the same acceptance standard
Send each provider the same core questions. Record included page groups and systems, access, output, implementation owner, meetings, retest, support window, exclusions, fee, and payment terms.
Download the blank SEO audit quote comparison worksheet to compare those fields. Ask about unknowns; price alone does not establish implementation or human analysis.
Define acceptance: for example, findings with supporting URLs, a prioritized first queue, owners, and a walkthrough. Technical fixes need separate post-implementation checks; accepting the document does not prove the website changed.
Google also recommends expecting realistic work and improvement estimates and rejecting guaranteed first-place rankings. A forecast should explain assumptions and uncertainty.
SEO audit cost FAQs
How much does an SEO audit cost?
There is no verified universal fee here. The two dated provider examples above are not a market average. Request a quote against your questions, systems, access, deliverables, implementation support, and retest.
Can I get an SEO audit for free?
A free scan may identify questions, but it does not define depth. Check for human interpretation, page-level evidence, priorities, owners, and testable next steps. For Meridian, an initial conversation clarifies scope; a detailed audit is a separately agreed project.
Does an audit include implementation?
Only when the proposal says so. The provider may advise, assist your developer, implement within agreed permissions, or price implementation separately. Name the owner and acceptance check for each priority.
How long does an SEO audit take?
SeoProfy's guide describes several days for smaller sites and 2–4 weeks for larger, more complex projects. Treat that as supplier guidance, not your delivery commitment. Request dates for access, analysis, walkthrough, and retest, including what happens if data or scope changes.
Is an SEO audit worth paying for?
It can be useful when it resolves an actionable decision and connects evidence to priorities, owners, and verification. Its value is harder to defend when scope is vague or no one can implement the work.
Discuss your audit scope
Bring the website, the problem you need to resolve, approximate page and template scale, languages, available evidence, and the likely implementation owner. Meridian's technical SEO audit scope explains how findings, priorities, responsibilities, and follow-up can be defined before a project is quoted.
