How to Find GEO Competitor Sites Worth Studying: Five Measurable Signals

The short answer: what makes a useful GEO competitor?

A useful GEO competitor is not merely a site that ChatGPT mentions occasionally. It should have meaningful AI visibility, a substantial set of cited pages, a sustained growth trend, and enough evidence to examine how conventional SEO relates to generative-search performance.

Start with five signals: whether AI Overviews contribute a clear share of visibility, whether cited pages exist at meaningful scale, whether growth is sustained over three to six months, whether SEO and GEO trends move together, and whether the distribution across ChatGPT, Gemini, and other channels reveals a pattern worth investigating.

This method was adapted from Yiwei's original Xiaohongshu video, How to Find a Valuable GEO Competitor Site. We converted the observations into a repeatable workflow and added metric definitions, screening thresholds, and safeguards against overclaiming.

The video uses the Semrush Domain Overview for fish.audio as an observational example. The captured snapshot shows AI Visibility 22, 1.9K Mentions, 1.5K Cited Pages, Authority Score 51, and estimated organic traffic of 575.9K. These are third-party estimates for a particular date, location, and database. They are not traffic figures disclosed by Fish Audio and should not be treated as industry benchmarks.

First, separate Mentions, Citations, and Cited Pages

Semrush defines Cited Pages as pages on a company's domain, blog, or knowledge base cited by AI-generated answers. Its Visibility Overview includes AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini. The dataset comes from Semrush's Prompt Database, so it is useful for trends and comparisons but is not a complete log from the AI platforms. See the Semrush metric documentation.

Signal 1: Does one AI channel contribute a clear share?

The goal is not to prove that AI Overviews are inherently better. It is to identify the retrieval ecosystem where the competitor succeeds.

Screening thresholds

Using the same country, device, date, and tool definition, record Mentions or Cited Pages by platform:

  • leading channel share ≥40%: a distinct channel pattern worth analyzing;
  • leading channel share 25%–39%: multi-channel distribution; sample each platform separately;
  • every channel <25%: do not claim there is a primary source;
  • fewer than 100 Mentions or 30 Cited Pages: keep as a watchlist item, not a core competitor.
Channel share = channel Mentions (or Cited Pages) ÷ total of the same metric

Do not divide ChatGPT Mentions by total Cited Pages. Numerator and denominator must use the same metric.

Google says support links in AI Overviews and AI Mode come from Google Search indexing and ranking systems. Pages must satisfy standard indexability and snippet requirements; there is no separate AI Overview technical shortcut. Signal 2: Have Cited Pages reached meaningful scale?

One homepage cited repeatedly proves one page performs. Many distinct cited pages indicate a potentially repeatable content system.

These are internal screening thresholds, not platform ranking rules. Compare large UGC, documentation, and tool sites with their peers rather than with a 15-page SaaS site.

Sample the competitor's top 20 cited pages. Label page type, topic, intent, update date, firsthand evidence, sources, schema, internal links, and CTA. Treat a pattern as repeatable only when at least 60% of sampled pages share it.

Signal 3: Is AI visibility growing for three to six months?

The third signal is sustained movement, not a single monthly spike.

Pull at least six consecutive months and calculate:

90-day growth = (current month - three months earlier) ÷ three months earlier
  • ≥50% 90-day growth plus three consecutive positive months: high-value growth case;
  • 20%–49% growth: stable watchlist case;
  • >100% in one month followed by a rapid decline: event-driven anomaly; investigate launches, PR, or methodology changes;
  • baseline below 30 Cited Pages: do not use percentage growth alone.

If organic keywords, organic traffic, and Cited Pages rise together, AI visibility may be building on indexing, topical authority, and content expansion.

Export at least six months of Organic Traffic, top-10 Organic Keywords, Cited Pages, Mentions, and Citations.

Signal 5: Is the ChatGPT-versus-Gemini mix unusual?

Separate two types of data:

  • AI referral traffic: real visits after a user clicks a link in an AI answer;
  • AI visibility or citations: third-party observations that a brand or page appeared.

Screening thresholds

  • one AI referral source contributes ≥50% of AI visits: primary traffic channel;
  • ChatGPT-to-Gemini traffic ratio ≥3:1 or ≤1:3: unusual platform mix worth investigating;
  • fewer than 100 monthly AI referral visits: do not infer a stable mix;
  • third-party estimate differs from first-party analytics by >30%: use first-party data and document the difference.

Platform concentration is not automatically an advantage. It may reflect audience habits, market, subject area, crawler access, or measurement coverage. Ask which pages, queries, and external sources produced the pattern.

A 30-minute GEO competitor screening workflow

1. Build a candidate pool — 5 minutes

Collect 10–20 domains from conventional search results, AI-answer citations, industry lists, and customer interviews. Require at least two matches across audience, product type, and business model.

2. Normalize the data — 3 minutes

Fix country, device, observation date, domain scope, AI platform, and the exact metric used.

3. Score candidates out of 100 — 10 minutes

  • 80–100: core analysis target;
  • 60–79: monthly watchlist;
  • 40–59: analyze selected pages only;
  • below 40: exclude.

4. Sample pages — 10 minutes

For every selected domain, inspect 20 Cited Pages. Record the five common page types, ten recurring entities, five frequent source types, publication and update dates, original evidence, and whether pages have both search rankings and AI citations.

5. Write only testable hypotheses — 2 minutes

A defensible conclusion:

Thirteen of the site's 20 frequently cited pages are product documentation or tutorials (65%). Next, test whether this page type also contributes organic rankings.

An unsupported conclusion:

AI prefers long articles, so every page should contain 3,000 words.

Common analytical errors

Reporting third-party estimates as actual traffic

Tools such as Semrush help with comparisons and trends. First-party analytics and server logs are closer to real traffic. Write “estimated” or “observed by the tool,” not “the site received.”

Treating Mentions as Citations

A brand mention does not mean the site served as a source. To assess content participation, inspect Citations, Cited Pages, and the cited URLs.

Looking at totals without time

A domain with 1,000 historical Cited Pages may be shrinking, while one with 200 may be growing rapidly. Use scale and trend together.

Turning correlation into causation

SEO and GEO may rise together because of a launch, media coverage, branded demand, or a measurement change. Co-movement alone does not establish cause.

Copying competitor content

Competitor research should identify topics, evidence, and distribution mechanisms—not produce a rewrite. Google warns that scaled pages without original value may violate its abuse policies. See Google's generative AI content guidance.

FAQ

Do more Cited Pages always mean better GEO performance?

No. Evaluate the queries, brand context, position, clicks, and conversions. A high count of irrelevant citations may create no business value.

Is a small site without 500 Cited Pages not worth studying?

It can still be valuable. Prioritize coverage and growth rate. A site with 25 cited pages out of 100 indexable content pages has 25% coverage and may be more instructive than a much larger domain.

Does GEO still require SEO?

Yes—especially for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which rely on core search indexing, ranking, and quality systems. Crawlability, indexability, content quality, internal links, and page experience remain foundational.

How often should competitors be reviewed?

Record core competitor metrics monthly and resample Cited Pages quarterly. During rapid growth or a launch, observe every two weeks, but do not rewrite strategy because of one week's movement.

Conclusion

The goal is not to choose the best-known brand or the most impressive AI Visibility score. Find a site with scale, a sustained trend, analyzable patterns, and a meaningful similarity to your business. Screen with five signals, sample 20 cited pages, and convert observations into testable hypotheses.
